About Ian

I’m a Pacific Northwest-based nature photographer currently residing in Seattle, Washington. After growing up in Wisconsin and completing my B.S. in Teaching Biology, I moved to Seattle where I currently work as a scientist at the University of Washington studying the genetics and disease mechanisms of rare neurodevelopmental disorders.

Fortunate to call the Pacific Northwest home, I have access to some of the most spectacular scenery in the country, from the rocky shores of the wild Pacific Ocean to the rugged Cascade mountain range extending from British Columbia to Northern California. After moving to Seattle, I began to devote the majority of his free time to pursuing nature photography. Since then I’ve traveled extensively throughout the western United States, photographing wild and beautiful landscapes across the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

Process

I believe a photograph should present a real moment and should closely reflect the conditions at that time. If the image moves away from this, it crosses over into digital art, a different genre, and in my opinion should no longer be presented as photography.

Therefore, my process from capture to print strives to present a real moment in time. Using careful technique and, most of all, patience, I try to capture the best image I can in camera in regards to sharpness and exposure.

Most images are single exposures. Occasionally multiple images are combined in post-processing to create panoramic images, capture high dynamic range scenes, or increase the depth of field. Further post-processing is applied modestly using traditional techniques including exposure and contrast adjustments, as well as color correction. Nothing has been added to the image that was not present in the original scene.

All of images were taken between 2010 and now using various full frame digital SLRs.

All images are printed on either fine art paper, ChromaLuxe HD Metal or Lumachrome and face-mounted to acrylic.
