House on Fire Ruin - Bears Ears National Monument, Utah
The Ancestral Puebloans, an ancient Native American culture that emerged around the 12th century and centered in the four corners region of the United States, are widely known incredible architecture, particularly their magnificent cliff dwellings. Made from mainly stone and adobe mud, pictured here is an individual dwelling. However several larger villages formed multistory structures, like those found at Mesa Verde.
I was particulaly drawn to this ruin in southeastern Utah, appropriately known as "House on Fire", due to the illusion created by the unique flame-like rock formation in the overhanging cliffside. When the late morning light reflects off the surrounding canyon walls, the rock transforms as the fiery orange colors begin to glow, producing an atonishing resemblance to a raging blaze bursting forth through the rooftop.
